Three killers detained after murder of Uruguayan in Palermo apartment

Argentine courts charged three detainees with the homicide of Carlos Andrés Migales Viera, 31 years old and a Uruguayan national, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday in an apartment in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Palermo. According to c5n.com, those charged are Gabriel Ramón Da Silva, Cristian Nahuel Paiva and Ulises Aladro, all Argentine nationals.

Paiva and Aladro are 20 and 21 years old respectively and are neighbours in Longchamps, a locality in the Buenos Aires suburbs, according to official records. Investigators believe there is also a fourth person involved who remains at large.

The crime and the flight captured on video

The victim was shot dead in the presence of his partner, a 27-year-old woman who was the sole witness to the act. According to her account, the assailants entered the building and the apartment without forcing any locks, and escaped immediately after the attack.

A neighbour recorded on video the moment three hooded men ran out of the building. When they reached a corner, one of them separated from the group. "I have a photo, you bastard," can be heard shouted by the person filming the scene.

The operation and weapons found

The City Police deployed an operation in the area that led to the detention of two suspects initially. On the corner of Intendente Bullrich and Santa Fe avenues, a few blocks from the crime scene, officers found the weapon used in the attack and carried out the corresponding tests. Another firearm was also found in an abandoned vehicle in the vicinity.

The witness, referred to the Prosecutor's Office only on Monday

Migales Viera's partner remained at the crime scene all Sunday under police custody. Only on Monday was she taken to the Prosecutor's Office. "They put the vest on her and take her out of here. In what capacity? It's still not clear: it could be either to give a statement at the Prosecutor's Office or if she will have some involvement in the conflict taking place in Uruguay between the drug gangs," explained journalist Mariela López Brown on the programme De Una on C5N.

Drug-related settling of scores: the main hypothesis

Investigators are working on the main hypothesis that the crime is a result of a settling of scores linked to international drug trafficking. Migales Viera had entered the country 15 days before being killed. Although some close to him claimed his trip was for a holiday, the investigation suggests he crossed the border to escape revenge related to drugs.

In that context, a connection appears with Sebastián Marsset, identified as a leader of Uruguayan drug trafficking who is currently serving time in the United States after being arrested by the DEA in Bolivia.

The victim's criminal history

Carlos Andrés Migales Viera had numerous criminal records in Uruguay related to drug trafficking. The first dates from June 2009, when he was 15 years old. From 2016 onwards, his cases became increasingly linked to drug sales, and in 2024 he was arrested for aggravated homicide.

He was the leader of the clan known as "La Mafiglia" or "Los Puglia", an organisation that maintains an open conflict with the rival gang "Los Suarez" in the Villa Español neighbourhood of Montevideo. His history also includes investigations into firearm discharges, injuries and crimes against property, most of them recorded in the Uruguayan capital.
