Uruguayan shot dead in Buenos Aires: two arrested and drug-trafficking motive under investigation

A Uruguayan citizen was shot dead during the early hours of Sunday in an apartment located at Costa Rica 5200, in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. Montevideo Portal confirmed with sources from the Interior Ministry that the victim was a member of Los Puglia, an organisation linked to drug trafficking that operates in the Villa Española area in Uruguay, and that he had a criminal record.

City Police arrived at the building following a 911 call alerting them to the presence of a deceased person. According to accounts given by relatives to investigators, between three and four people entered the apartment without forcing the door or lock, fired at the man with virtually no warning and fled the scene.

Based on descriptions from witnesses and analysis of public and private security camera footage, security forces deployed an operation that made it possible to detain two suspects. Two other individuals involved remain at large and are being sought by Argentine authorities.

During the procedure, officers also found a firearm in the vicinity of Santa Fe and Bullrich avenues, approximately eight blocks from the crime scene. Investigators believe the weapon may have been discarded during the flight; it will be subjected to expert examination to determine whether it was used in the homicide.

The Uruguayan Interior Ministry stated that Uruguayan police provided the victim's background to their Argentine counterparts and is actively collaborating with the investigation. They clarified that the man was not wanted in Uruguayan territory and that the homicide is being investigated by the authorities of the neighbouring country. The victim had entered Argentina a few weeks before the crime.

Among the hypotheses being considered by investigators is a possible settlement of scores linked to drug trafficking, although the definitive motive has not been determined. The case was assigned to National Court of Criminal and Correctional Matters No. 26, which ordered the intervention of the Scientific Police and other measures to clarify the circumstances of the homicide and identify the remaining individuals involved.
