Uruguayan dead from gunshots in Buenos Aires: two detained and drug-trafficking lead
A 31-year-old Uruguayan citizen was shot dead on Sunday in his apartment on Costa Rica street at number 5200, in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Palermo. The victim, identified as Carlos Andrés Migales Viera, had recently arrived from Uruguay and was at the location with his wife, according to telenoche.com.uy.
According to Argentine media outlet TN, between three and four people entered the apartment and fired shots at Migales Viera, who died on the spot. Family members told investigators that the attackers entered without forcing the door or the lock.
Following the homicide, the City Police launched an operation in the surrounding area and detained two suspects near the intersections of Avenida Santa Fe and Bullrich, across from the 1st Regiment of Infantry Patricios premises. During the procedure, officers found a firearm that appeared to have been discarded from a vehicle on a public street. The Scientific Police preserved the item under a tarpaulin to protect the evidence, which was located near park sprinklers. The weapon will undergo expert examination to establish whether it was used in the crime.
Migales Viera had a criminal record in Uruguay since adolescence. His history included cases of armed robbery, escape from a police station, disorderly conduct and offences related to narcotics. In 2016, his arrests were primarily associated with drug sales, and in 2024 he was detained for an aggravated homicide. There were also cases involving firearm discharge, injuries and crimes against property, with involvement from the National Anti-Drugs Brigade, the Investigations Division and the Highway Police, all departments operating in Montevideo.
The investigation continues with the search for at least two other suspects who, according to the victim's family members, allegedly participated in the attack. Investigators are not ruling out any hypothesis, including that of a settlement of accounts linked to drug trafficking.
The case was assigned to National Criminal and Correctional Court No. 26, which ordered the detention of the two arrested individuals and issued further measures to clarify the crime and identify the remaining persons involved.
