Preventive detention in Entre Ríos for Uruguayan wanted for bank robbery and homicide

The justice system of Entre Ríos ordered 30 days of preventive detention for Inti Camilo Cuba Vignolo, a 38-year-old Uruguayan citizen arrested at a road checkpoint in Brazo Largo on Route 12, according to diarioelargentino.com. Two firearms with obliterated serial numbers, more than 427 grammes of cocaine, seven mobile telephones and money in various currencies were found in his possession.

The ruling was adopted on Monday 19 October by Gualeguaychú Guarantees Judge Natalia Céspedes during a hearing on coercive measures. Cuba Vignolo will serve his preventive detention at the Gualeguaychú Police Departmental Headquarters.

The hearing and the parties' requests

Interim auxiliary prosecutor of Islas del Ibicuy, Gastón Popelka, requested 45 days of detention, arguing the evidence gathered in the investigation and flight risk as a procedural danger. Public defender Lautaro Boladeres opposed the measure. The magistrate partially granted the request and set a term of 30 days.

The arrest at the road checkpoint

The procedure began in the early hours of Saturday 17 October, when police officers intercepted a private passenger transport vehicle heading from the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires towards Colón.

When requesting identification documents from the occupants, the passenger seated in the rear seat stated that he was not carrying identification and, according to the police report, displayed a hostile attitude when asked to exit the vehicle. While the officers inspected his luggage, the man began insulting them and attempted to flee; he was subdued and taken into police custody. Shortly afterwards he acknowledged his Uruguayan nationality and declared that he was wanted by the justice authorities of his country.

With judicial authorisation, the police conducted a search of the vehicle and the suspect's belongings. They found a Bersa pistol calibre 9 millimetre and a Smith & Wesson revolver calibre .38, both with obliterated identifying serial numbers, along with magazines and ammunition.

Dangerous Drugs personnel intervened upon discovery of suspicious substances; preliminary tests returned positive results for cocaine, with a total of 427.3 grammes seized. Additionally, 2,000 United States dollars, 82,000 Uruguayan pesos and 200,000 Argentine pesos were seized, all placed at the disposal of the justice system for corresponding expert analysis.

Linked to the BROU robbery in Pando and a homicide case

Cuba Vignolo was subject to an Interpol blue alert and was wanted by Uruguayan authorities as part of several criminal investigations. Among these is his alleged participation in the robbery of a branch of the Banco de la República Oriental del Uruguay (BROU) that occurred on 24 August 2026 in Pando, Canelones department.

According to the reconstruction disseminated by Uruguayan authorities, a group of criminals arrived at the establishment in a Mercedes-Benz motor vehicle. One of the members entered first with face uncovered, posing as a customer, whilst others entered later with their faces covered. The robbers overpowered the security personnel, took the money and escaped. Banking authorities determined that the haul amounted to approximately 10 million Uruguayan pesos, 70,000 dollars and 90,000 euros.

During the flight, the Mercedes-Benz—reported as stolen in October 2025—collided on Route 101, forcing its occupants to seek another vehicle. The criminals entered a dwelling and stole a Fiat Fiorino from a family; the van was later found in the Carrasco neighbourhood in Montevideo.

The investigation made it possible to identify several alleged members of the group and advance with arrests and charges. According to information released by the Uruguayan Interior Ministry, Cuba Vignolo had a record for robbery and was also wanted in a homicide case in Montevideo.

The investigation continues in Entre Ríos

The Islas del Ibicuy prosecution will continue with proceedings to determine the circumstances in which the detainee was transporting the firearms, narcotics, mobile telephones and seized money. The Public Prosecutor's Office stated that various investigative measures remain pending and that corresponding judicial coordination must be carried out regarding existing requests from Uruguay.

During the 30 days established by Judge Céspedes, Cuba Vignolo will remain detained in Gualeguaychú while the investigation advances on both sides of the Río Uruguay.
