Fugitive Uruguayan captured in Entre Ríos with weapons and cocaine

A 38-year-old Uruguayan citizen was detained during a night-time police checkpoint at the Brazo Largo post in Entre Ríos after it was confirmed he had an active Interpol blue alert, elheraldo.com.ar reported. In the operation, two firearms with obliterated serial numbers, seven mobile telephones, currency in various denominations and 427.3 grams of cocaine hydrochloride were seized.

The operation was carried out in the early hours of the morning when police officers intercepted a private transport vehicle travelling the route from the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires to the city of Colón. The driver was transporting the suspect in the back seat.

When asked for identification, the passenger stated he had none. Police sources indicated that the man displayed a hostile attitude and attempted to flee during the search of his luggage, and was subdued by officers.

After being searched, the detainee acknowledged his Uruguayan nationality and admitted he was a fugitive from the justice system of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay. Checks confirmed the existence of the international alert in his name.

With the intervention of the prosecutor for Islas del Ibicuy, Gastón Popelka, and by order of the Guarantee Judge for Gualeguaychú, Natalia Céspedes, a formal search of the individual, the vehicle and the luggage was ordered.

The search resulted in the seizure of a Bersa 9-millimetre pistol with obliterated serial number and two magazines—one with 16 cartridges—and a Smith & Wesson .38 calibre revolver, also with the serial number erased. Additionally, seven mobile telephones and cash were seized: 2,000 United States dollars, 82,000 Uruguayan pesos and 200,000 Argentine pesos.

Personnel from the Dangerous Drugs Division of the Islas Departmental Police Headquarters conducted field tests on a substance found in the luggage. The analyses determined that it was cocaine hydrochloride with a total weight of 427.3 grams.

According to police sources, the detainee has a judicial record in Uruguay that includes an arrest warrant for alleged involvement in a robbery of Banco República and a case for homicide.

The man was taken to the Islas Departmental Police Headquarters, where he was placed at the disposal of the justice system. The authorities are expected to coordinate proceedings with judicial and consular bodies in the region. The operation is part of the preventative checks carried out by the Entre Ríos Police at the province's access points.
