Uruguayan with criminal history murdered in Palermo apartment
Carlos Andrés Migales Viera, 31 years old and of Uruguayan nationality, was shot dead in the early hours of Sunday in an apartment located at Costa Rica 5200, in the Palermo neighbourhood of Buenos Aires. According to canal26.com, the investigation is pursuing various hypotheses, including that of a settling of scores.
Migales Viera had recently arrived from Montevideo with his wife, María Mercedes, 27 years old. Both were staying in the residence where the crime occurred.
Criminal record since adolescence
The victim's judicial history dates back to 2009, when he was 15 years old. In 2010 he was linked to cases involving robbery, an escape from a police station, an incident of disorder, and a drug seizure. In 2016 he was detained in connection with a drug trafficking case.
In 2024 he was charged with a series of offences including aggravated homicide, discharge of a firearm, another homicide, injuries, and offences against property. All of these records were based in Montevideo, according to Clarín.
Due to his history, Migales Viera was known to Uruguay's National Anti-Drug Brigade, the Investigations Division, and the Highway Police.
The attack and detention of two suspects
Judicial sources told TN that between three and four people entered the apartment where the victim was located. An element that caught investigators' attention is that the attackers apparently accessed the premises without forcing the door or lock. Once inside, they fired several shots at Migales Viera, who died at the scene.
Following the murder, Buenos Aires City Police deployed an operation in the surrounding area. During the procedure, officers detained two suspects in the vicinity of Avenida Santa Fe and Avenida Bullrich, across from the Infantry Regiment 1 "Patricios" of the Army. In that sector, police also found a firearm that appeared to have been discarded from a vehicle. The weapon was taken into custody and will be subject to expert examination to determine whether it was used in the crime.
The investigation and ongoing hypotheses
The case was placed in the hands of the National Court for Criminal and Correctional Matters No. 26. Investigators are seeking to reconstruct what happened before, during, and after the attackers entered the apartment.
Among the elements being analysed are the victim's recent arrival from Uruguay, his criminal record, the number of people who participated in the attack, and the fact that the attackers apparently did not need to force entry. The hypothesis of a settling of scores is one of the main lines of inquiry, although the motive has yet to be established by the courts.
