Uruguayan with police record shot dead in Palermo apartment

Carlos Andrés Migales Viera, 31, was shot dead on Sunday inside an apartment located at Costa Rica 5200, in the Buenos Aires neighbourhood of Palermo, according to tn.com.ar. The man had recently arrived from Montevideo and was staying at the location with his wife, María Mercedes, 27, also a Uruguayan national.

Migales Viera had an extensive criminal record in Uruguay dating back to 2009, when he was 15 years old. His prior convictions include a robbery charge, an escape from a police station and a drug seizure in 2010, as well as an arrest for drug trafficking in 2016. In 2024 he was charged with aggravated homicide, firearm discharge, a second homicide, injuries and offences against property, all cases filed in Montevideo, according to Clarín. The man was known to the Uruguayan National Anti-Drug Brigade, the Investigations Division and the Highway Police.

According to judicial sources consulted by tn.com.ar, between three and four people entered the apartment where the victim was. Family members of Migales Viera reported that the attackers entered without forcing the door or lock and, once inside, fired several shots that caused his death on the premises.

Following the attack, the City Police deployed an operation in the area and detained two suspects near Santa Fe and Bullrich, in front of the grounds of the Army's 1st Infantry Regiment "Patricios". During the procedure, officers found a firearm that had apparently been discarded from a vehicle. The weapon will be subjected to expert examination to determine whether it was used in the homicide; the Scientific Police placed a tent over the object to preserve the evidence, given that it was near sprinklers in a park.

The case was placed under the jurisdiction of the National Court for Criminal and Correctional Matters No. 26.
