In southern France, near Nice, security forces arrested a young man from the Caucasus. The 24-year-old is considered the prime suspect in the death of an elderly woman from Germany in Vienna, an Austrian state.
On the evening of 25 June, acquaintances of the 70-year-old discovered the body in her apartment in the sixth district of the federal capital. The woman, who was originally born as a man and later changed her gender, showed clear injuries from knife stabs and cuts. Investigators believe the violent act had taken place days before.
Criminal investigators in the federal capital worked quickly through the deceased's social environment. During this process, they focused on a young man who allegedly had lived temporarily in the home of the murdered woman. However, the suspect had disappeared without a trace.
As the investigation progressed, it became clear that the wanted man had crossed the border into France shortly after the presumed time of the offence. On the basis of these findings, the Austrian judicial authorities issued an arrest warrant with European jurisdiction.
Thanks to cooperation between the Austrian investigators and the French manhunt unit FAST, it was possible to locate the fugitive in the Nice region. French police executed the arrest warrant on Wednesday evening and took the man into custody. The investigation is continuing.
