Arrest following violence in Vienna: alleged perpetrator apprehended in 12th district
A 26-year-old man who was found seriously injured in a courtyard in Vienna's Fünfhaus district in mid-August died shortly after from his injuries. According to Kronen Zeitung, police have now identified the alleged perpetrator following weeks of investigation and arrested him on Friday.
Residents of Ullmannsstrasse discovered the victim during the night of 11 August in a courtyard of a residential building complex. Despite immediate rescue measures being initiated, all help came too late – the 26-year-old died at the scene.
However, the courtyard was not the actual scene of the crime, as investigations by the authorities revealed. The victim, who had connections to the drug scene, had apparently become involved in a dispute with several people near a fast-food branch at Gaudenzdorfer Gürtel beforehand. Severely wounded, he then dragged himself to the courtyard of the residential complex, where he collapsed and died.
During the investigation, police identified a 25-year-old Syrian as the main suspect. Police spokeswoman Irina Steirer described him as the "immediate suspect in the act of killing". She further clarified: "The 25-year-old has no place of residence in Austria."
As the suspect was at large, the judiciary issued a European arrest warrant. However, he was apprehended not abroad but in another Vienna district – he was arrested in the 12th district on Friday afternoon. During questioning, the suspect confessed only to participating in the act. He is remanded in custody.
