A routine police operation in Tyrol on Tuesday, 9 June 2026, uncovered a far more serious crime. Officers had stopped a 27-year-old man from Romania and his 22-year-old accomplice – also of Romanian origin – for a traffic violation. A passerby alerted the officers that the man might be active in the sex trade.

This tip led police to a nearby tavern where two 23-year-old women, fellow countrymen of the suspects, were present. During interrogation, the two women stated that they had been lured into prostitution through sham relationships. For months they are said to have worked as sex workers and handed over all their earnings to the 27-year-old.

One of the women also reported physical abuse and intimidation by the main suspect. She stated that she was afraid of him. On the basis of these statements, suspicion of procuring and serious coercion intensified. Furthermore, evidence emerged of document forgery, assault and vandalism.

The man's companion also comes under the scrutiny of investigators. She is suspected of having participated in the crimes and seriously intimidated one of the women. The Innsbruck state prosecutor's office ordered the detention of the 27-year-old.
