Cocaine in BMW, child unsecured: 23-year-old flees into cornfield in Lustenau
A 23-year-old Austrian fled police in Lustenau, leaving his wife and child in the car, and hid in a cornfield. Police officers found cocaine and cannabis resin in the BMW.
Lustenau escape ends with arrest and cocaine discovery
As reported by 20 Minuten, police in Lustenau – immediately on the border with Switzerland – noticed a grey BMW 3 Series on Wednesday in which a child was sitting without a seatbelt. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated and fled in the direction of Hohenems, as the Vorarlberg State Police Directorate announced on Thursday.
During the flight, the 23-year-old Austrian drove at excessive speed through Lustenau. According to police, this led to several dangerous situations in which other road users had to swerve to avoid collisions.
In the area of Widnauer Straße, the man abandoned the vehicle with a woman and the child inside and ran into an adjacent cornfield. Police secured the BMW. A police dog located the fugitive in the cornfield; the 23-year-old was arrested.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, officers established that the registration plates had been stolen in Germany. Inside the BMW, they found cocaine and cannabis resin.
On the order of the public prosecutor's office, the man was taken to Feldkirch Prison. He is being charged with numerous administrative offences and violations of the Narcotic Substances Act and the Criminal Code.
During the search operation, numerous police patrols were deployed along with a police helicopter and a drone. Lustenau Police Station is asking witnesses and persons who had to swerve to avoid the BMW to contact +43 59133 8144-100.
