Femicide in Graz: 23-year-old arrested after woman's death in city centre
According to Google News AT — Crime (de), a suspected femicide occurred in Graz city centre on Thursday: a 24-year-old woman was killed in a flat near Bischofplatz. It is already the 22nd femicide in Austria in the current year.
Police were informed by telephone of the violent act around midday and proceeded to the flat in question. Shortly after officers arrived, the young woman was found lifeless.
A 23-year-old suspect was arrested by SIG police officers still in the stairwell of the building. Eyewitnesses described him as completely covered in blood. According to police, he is believed to come from the victim's family circle.
No screams, no gunshot — nobody noticed the act
Although the area around Bischofplatz is among the busy parts of the city centre and numerous outdoor dining areas operate in the immediate vicinity, nobody noticed anything about the act — neither screams nor a gunshot. The police emphasised that there was no danger to the public at any time.
Police are currently making no statements about the exact course of events or the weapon used. "We can say little about the motive at this stage," police spokesman Sabri Yorgun explained. The investigation would not be commented on further for tactical reasons.
The two — victim and suspected perpetrator — are believed to have been alone in the flat at the time of the act. Investigators secured traces at the crime scene; an interview with the arrested person is expected to provide further background on the act.
Separate operation due to suspicious object
Additional alarm was caused on the street by an operation at a neighbouring construction site, where a suspicious object had been reported. However, after around 30 minutes, the all-clear was given.
The incident follows a discovery on Tuesday in Vöcklabruck, Upper Austria, where children found the body of a 53-year-old woman on the riverbank, who bore multiple stab wounds. Investigations are also ongoing in this case.
