A police check for an unrestrained child triggered a spectacular chase in Lustenau on Wednesday, 2 September 2026. According to Google News AT — Crime (de), a 23-year-old raced through the town in a grey BMW, forcing other road users to swerve, before disappearing on foot into a maize field.
At around 16:20, a patrol from Lustenau municipal police noticed the vehicle. When officers attempted to stop the BMW, the driver accelerated and fled in the direction of Hohenems. According to police, he committed numerous administrative offences and drove at excessive speed through the town.
In the area of Widnauer Straße, the 23-year-old finally abandoned the BMW – at that point, a woman and a child were in the vehicle. He himself ran into an adjacent maize field.
The Vorarlberg police surrounded the field and, in addition to numerous patrols, deployed a helicopter, a drone, and police dogs. A police dog unit eventually located the fugitive and arrested him.
When the vehicle was subsequently searched, further incriminating details emerged: the BMW bore number plates stolen in Germany. Officers also seized cannabis resin and cocaine.
The Feldkirch public prosecutor's office ordered the man to be remanded in Feldkirch prison. He faces charges for numerous administrative offences as well as breaches of narcotics legislation and the criminal code.
Police are now seeking witnesses who had to swerve to avoid the BMW during the flight or who observed dangerous situations. Information is requested at Lustenau police station.
