A man from Tulln (61) took approximately €45,000 in coins from car park payment machines during his night-time work. His task was to empty the machines and pass the cash on to his employer. Instead, he kept most of it for himself.
The criminal offence spanned an entire year. Eventually, the irregularities came to light. Before the competent court in St. Pölten, the accused confessed to the deed.
As a motive, he cited a pathological passion for gambling. He described how he would fall into a kind of frenzy when playing. On one occasion he had won €20,000, but had immediately gambled it away again. He also reported extreme working conditions with constantly insufficient staff, which had pushed him to his limits.
This was his first offence against criminal law. The presiding judge imposed a five-month suspended prison sentence. The decision can still be appealed. The man must also compensate for the financial damage caused. He accepted the verdict.
