A 93-year-old resident is suspected of intentionally blowing up a detached house in Vienna. Police are treating it as a case of deliberate arson. The man was arrested on the orders of the public prosecutor and is being held under guard in a hospital.

Several people were injured in the explosion. Among them is a 25-year-old pregnant woman who had to be taken to hospital. Six other residents were treated on site by Vienna's professional emergency services and were subsequently discharged to home care.

Emergency services found the elderly man in the basement of the completely destroyed building. He himself suffered injuries and had to be rescued. What motivated the 93-year-old to commit the act remains unclear. Investigators from the Vienna State Criminal Police Office have launched an investigation. The full extent of the damage is not yet known.
