A violent gas explosion occurred in Vienna's Floridsdorf district in the night leading into Sunday, completely destroying a detached house and causing severe damage to neighbouring buildings. Police suspect the 93-year-old homeowner of the act, as reported by the portal TA3.
Nine people were injured in total in the incident, including the suspected perpetrator himself. Three people, among them the accused senior, had to be admitted to hospital. Rescue workers treated six residents at the scene who were subsequently discharged into home care. The hospitalised patients include a 25-year-old pregnant woman.
During the operation, firefighters deployed rescue dogs that located the man in the basement of the devastated and partially burnt-out house. Rescuers freed him and brought him to hospital with serious injuries.
On suspicion of deliberately endangering the public, the prosecutor's office ordered his arrest. The man is being held under guard in hospital. Vienna's criminal investigators have begun their investigation; the motive for the act remains unclear so far.
