A massive detonation destroyed a detached house in Vienna's Floridsdorf district overnight into Sunday. The explosion occurred shortly after midnight. The building was reduced to rubble, and several neighbouring houses were also damaged.
Rescue dogs detected signs of life beneath the debris. Emergency personnel located the 93-year-old house resident using a special camera and brought him seriously injured to a hospital. Doctors continue fighting for his life. In addition to him, eight other people required medical assistance, including a pregnant woman who apparently suffered more serious injuries when she fell during the explosion.
Austrian police stated that the 93-year-old is suspected of deliberately triggering the gas explosion to destroy his house. The state prosecutor ordered his arrest. However, due to serious injuries, he remains in hospital under police guard. Investigations are ongoing, and a motive has not yet been officially confirmed.
According to Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung, a family dispute could be in the background. Neighbours reportedly said the man had stated several times: "I do not want to go to a nursing home." According to the newspaper, there was allegedly even a legal dispute between him and his stepson over placement in a home against his will. Police have not confirmed these details so far.
