A 93-year-old resident of a detached house in Vienna's Floridsdorf district is suspected of deliberately triggering a gas explosion in the night leading into Sunday. The detonation completely destroyed his house and injured nine people – including himself.

The information was distributed by the APA agency and picked up by the portal TA3.

Neighbouring detached houses also suffered severe damage. Three people, including the suspect, had to be admitted to hospital. According to police, the motive for the act is the subject of investigation.

Among the injured is also a 25-year-old pregnant woman who was taken to hospital. Six further residents were treated on site and subsequently released to their homes, rescue services reported. Search dogs located the 93-year-old in the basement of the completely destroyed and partially burnt-out house during the fire department operation. Rescue workers freed him and took him to hospital with serious injuries.

On suspicion of deliberately endangering the public, the man was arrested on the orders of the public prosecutor's office and is being held in hospital under supervision. Vienna's criminal police have taken up the investigation.
