In Upper Austria, criminals are employing a new tactic to identify unoccupied flats. They attach thin, transparent strips to entrance doors of multi-family houses.
The method works as follows: first, the perpetrators gain access to houses with multiple residential units. They then affix fine adhesive threads in the lower door area. After several hours or the next day, they check whether the markings remain in place. If the strips are undisturbed, the burglars conclude that no one is present – and strike.
The State Criminal Police Office confirms that there have already been several thefts following this pattern. Linz, Traun, Wels and Steyr are among the affected locations.
The authorities urge extreme vigilance. Anyone who discovers such traces on their door or at neighbours' doors should immediately alert the police on 133. Anonymous tips are also possible.
