Burglary gang marks doors with tape in Upper Austria
The Upper Austrian State Criminal Police Office is pursuing a group of criminals who target flats using a sophisticated technique. The unknown perpetrators leave barely visible markings at apartment entrances to determine whether anyone is home.
This is how the scheme works: the perpetrators enter multi-family buildings and place fine strips of tape in the lower door area. These sit between the door leaf and frame and go unnoticed by most residents. After several hours or the following day, the suspects return and check what they have left behind. If the strips are still intact, the burglars conclude that the flat is empty – and strike.
In recent days alone, the perpetrators have targeted flats in Linz, Traun, Wels and Steyr. The Upper Austrian police are therefore calling on all citizens to remain vigilant. Anyone who notices such irregularities at their apartment door should immediately contact the local police station or call the emergency number 133. Prompt reporting allows investigators to act immediately and pursue the perpetrators' trail. Every tip is treated confidentially.
