The remains of a woman who was approaching her hundredth birthday have been found encased in concrete in a Lower Austrian building. A 57-year-old man – allegedly the son of the deceased – was detained as he departed the United Arab Emirates.
The Vienna State Prosecutor's Office confirmed to the APA that an arrest had taken place. No further details were known to the investigating authorities. A forensic examination has been ordered, but the results are still pending. Investigations are currently proceeding in all directions.
According to media reports, the elderly woman had previously been reported missing. Late on the evening of 28 May, police requested the fire service's assistance in opening a door. The property is believed to have been the pensioner's secondary residence. Specialist dogs detected an odour and led officers to a wall in the cellar passageway. There, investigators discovered the body sealed in cement.
Since the discovery, investigations have been intensive, but the authorities have been tight-lipped from the outset. The press has circulated the theory that possible social benefits fraud may be involved. According to this, the woman may have died of natural causes some time ago and was subsequently sealed in to continue collecting her old-age pension.
