French law enforcement officers took a 24-year-old man into custody on 8 July in the greater Nice area. He is believed to be responsible for the violent death of a 70-year-old Vienna resident.
The elderly woman was found lifeless in her Mariahilf flat on 25 June by acquaintances. Investigators identified numerous cut and stab wounds on the body. The time of death was likely several days prior.
The State Crime Office of the Federal Capital and the Federal Crime Office investigated the case. Attention ultimately focused on a 24-year-old Russian from the victim's social circle who had lived under the same roof as the deceased.
The suspect left Austria shortly after the alleged time of the crime, heading west. The Vienna public prosecutor's office subsequently issued an arrest warrant under European law. Federal Crime Office officials reconstructed the escape route and initiated a cross-border search.
The French Fugitive Active Search Team, a specialised network for pursuing fleeing suspects, supported the operation. Together, the discovery and apprehension in Nice was achieved.
Vienna's deputy police commissioner Dieter Csefan and Federal Crime Office Chief Andreas Holzer emphasised the importance of close international coordination in combating serious crimes.
