When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated and drove off in the direction of Hohenems.
The 23-year-old sped through the town area at excessive speed. According to police, other road users had to swerve multiple times to prevent collisions. In the course of the flight, numerous administrative violations and several dangerous situations occurred.
In the area of Widnauer Straße, the man eventually abandoned the car — at that point a child and a woman were still in the vehicle. He then fled on foot into an adjacent cornfield.
Police cordoned off the area extensively. In addition to numerous patrol cars, a helicopter and a drone were deployed. A police dog unit finally located the man and took him into custody.
Upon inspection of the vehicle, officers determined that the number plates affixed to it had been stolen in Germany. They also found drugs inside, including cannabis resin and cocaine.
The Feldkirch public prosecutor's office ordered the 23-year-old to be taken into Feldkirch prison. He is being charged with numerous administrative offences as well as violations under narcotics legislation and the criminal code.
Lustenau police station is appealing for witnesses and persons who had to swerve to avoid the fleeing vehicle to come forward.
