An FPÖ parliamentarian hired a young man with connections to the Identity Movement as a parliamentary staff member following his alleged involvement in a violent attack on a taxi driver in Leoben.

Styrian FPÖ parliamentarian Michael Oberlechner hired a young man with connections to the far-right Identity Movement as a parliamentary staff member. The politician was aware that the man in question had allegedly been involved in a violent attack on a taxi driver in Leoben shortly beforehand.
The incident occurred on 20 June. A group of young men allegedly attacked the taxi driver, strangled him, and continued kicking him after he had already fallen to the ground. The young man whom Oberlechner subsequently hired as staff is said to have been part of this group.
The case has caused considerable discontent within the FPÖ. Party leader Herbert Kickl reportedly expressed himself clearly about the personnel matter at an internal meeting on Monday. Previously, FPÖ leading candidate Martin Rosenkranz had defended the employment of Identity Movement members as staff.
Nearly all political parties have now expressed openness to security checks when hiring staff members in political offices.
