Arrest following suspected homicide in Vienna period property

A 35-year-old woman was found motionless with visible injuries in a stairwell in Vienna's third district, Landstraße, overnight Thursday. According to Kleine Zeitung, police announced on Saturday that a 40-year-old man had been arrested – the live-in partner of the deceased, who was present during resuscitation efforts and behaved suspiciously.

Based on the circumstances of discovery, investigators quickly assumed a homicide had occurred. The woman bore bruises and injuries consistent with blunt-force trauma. Vienna's State Criminal Police Office, specialising in personal injury and homicide, took over the investigation. An autopsy is to clarify the exact cause of death; results were not available on Saturday.

The deceased is a woman from Eastern Europe who was not registered in Austria and apparently spent time in homeless circles. She had not previously come to police attention in the country. Her social environment was subsequently examined comprehensively.

She was discovered on one of the lower floors of a period property in the third district.
