Fraudsters swindle thousands of euros from Klagenfurt pensioner

A 65-year-old woman from the Klagenfurt-Land district has fallen victim to fraud and lost several thousand euros. As reported by meinbezirk.at, the woman filed a report with police yesterday.

The fraud was preceded by a series of SMS messages that had reached the woman over recent days. In them, she was informed that her ID-Austria login credentials would supposedly expire, according to police.

On 13 October, a call then followed from an unknown person who posed as a bank employee. The caller claimed that unknown individuals had hacked the woman's access credentials and were attempting to gain access to her account. In order to check and secure the account, she would need to provide her access credentials.

The 65-year-old trusted the caller and provided the requested information over the telephone. Subsequently, the perpetrators transferred several thousand euros to various accounts — both within the country and abroad. Police have launched an investigation.
