On Sunday evening, several police officers were deployed to an incident at a flat in Vienna's 16th district. The 54-year-old resident had previously made statements that suggested a possible risk of self-harm. However, when the officers arrived, the man pointed a knife at the emergency personnel.
Police were called to the address at around 20:45 to prevent a possible case of self-injury. According to police spokesman Markus Dittrich, the 54-year-old initially opened his door. However, shortly afterwards he refused to cooperate and insulted the uniformed officers.
In the course of the incident, the man pulled a kitchen knife and pointed it at the officers who had arrived. The police then deployed pepper spray against the aggressor. Using physical force, they managed to overpower the man and take him into custody.
The 54-year-old was provisionally detained. The Vienna prosecutor's office initiated an investigation into suspicion of threatening behaviour and resisting state authority.
