Man steals car in Salzburg and flees from police
A 31-year-old Salzburg resident stole a car belonging to an acquaintance on Wednesday and fled in it. Police stopped him later in Salzburg-Aigen.
A passer-by observed a loud altercation between the man and a woman on Wednesday afternoon in Hallein (Tennengau). Both then drove away together in a vehicle in the direction of Salzburg city. The witness notified the emergency services.
Officers established during their investigations that the car had been reported as stolen. The owner stated that the 31-year-old had taken the keys from her apartment without asking.
Shortly afterwards, police spotted the vehicle in Aigen. During the stop, the driver put up considerable resistance and behaved in a hostile manner towards officers. The emergency personnel had to overpower and arrest him.
Narcotics were found on the suspect. As officers suspected he might have been under the influence of drugs, a medical examination was ordered. The stolen vehicle was seized and returned to its owner.
The prosecutor's office ordered that the man be charged whilst remaining at liberty. Further investigations are ongoing.
