Two days after the death of a 24-year-old at Bischofplatz, the suspect confessed to the crime. The motive remains unclear.

Confession in Graz apartment murder – motive still unexplained

Two days after the violent killing of a 24-year-old in central Graz, the suspect confessed fully on Saturday. According to krone.at, the 23-year-old brother of the victim's partner is said to have beaten the woman to death with a hammer.

The Graz prosecutor's office confirmed on Saturday that an autopsy of the body had revealed "massive violence to the head" as the cause of death. The authority initially declined to make an official statement on the precise murder weapon.

The suspect's mandatory interrogation took place on Saturday midday. He made his first confession at that time – in previous interviews, he had remained silent on all charges. Following the interrogation, the 23-year-old was remanded in custody.

Dispute as background

The prosecutor's office did not comment directly on the motive. However, spokesman Christian Kroschl acknowledged that there had been disputes between the murdered 24-year-old and the accused prior to the killing.

Arrest in the stairwell

Police were alerted by telephone on Thursday at around 12.40 on Thursday regarding an act of violence in an apartment at Bischofplatz. Officers who arrived found the severely injured woman, who succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The suspect was arrested shortly after the crime in the stairwell of the building by officers of the Rapid Intervention Group (SIG) – eyewitnesses described him as covered in blood.

The 23-year-old is believed to have forcibly entered the apartment. His brother, who lived with the woman, was apparently not present at the time of the killing.
