The Korneuburg state prosecutor's office has opened proceedings following the death of an inmate at Vienna-Josefstadt correctional facility. The man died on 27 August 2025 from an overdose of medication. The authority is now investigating whether prison staff acted negligently and violated their supervisory duties.

Not only staff members from the Josefstadt facility have come under scrutiny from investigators. Employees of other Austrian correctional facilities are also being examined.

The incident occurred shortly after the publication of an investigation report by Justice Minister Anna Sporrer (SPÖ). A commission appointed by her had uncovered substantial structural deficiencies in the Austrian prison system at the beginning of the week and called for comprehensive reforms.

This is already the second known death in a correctional facility within a short period of time. The state prosecutor's office is investigating the suspicion of negligent homicide and possible abuse of office in both cases.

The recent events cast a critical light on conditions in the Austrian prison system. Working conditions and security measures in the detention facilities are increasingly the subject of public debate. Whether the ongoing investigations will lead to charges remains to be seen. Source: Der Standard
