According to Kronen Zeitung, a neighbouring resident heard several shots and looked out of the window. At first, he suspected fireworks – then he spotted a man on a balcony who appeared to be firing a weapon. The witness immediately alerted police.

Officers responded with a large contingent. Staff from the Ziegelofenweg police station were supported by forces from the Floridsdorf district police command, the police dog unit and WEGA.

Suspect leaves flat on request

While en route, officers were able to identify the flat in question and contact the suspect by telephone. He was instructed to leave the building – the man complied with the order.

During the subsequent search, WEGA officers found an alarm pistol and ammunition. The weapon was seized.

Weapons ban breached

According to the Vienna State Police Directorate, the suspect is a 27-year-old Austrian citizen who had rented the flat. Particularly striking: the man was subject to an active weapons ban at the time of the incident. He has been charged.
