Before the Klagenfurt Regional Court on Tuesday, a 20-year-old defendant appeared alongside his 17-year-old girlfriend. Both had to answer for a series of offences, with the evidence differing significantly on individual counts.
The investigators had accused the couple of obtaining counterfeit banknotes via the internet and putting them into circulation in the city of Villach. However, the evidence hearing produced contradictory witness statements, leading the court to find the defendant not guilty on this count. Whether anyone had actually ordered the notes and whether they ever entered circulation could not be clarified.
The accusations against the older of the two defendants were considerably more serious. The prosecution alleged that he had regularly assaulted his partner in their shared flat. Specifically, this involved punches, strangulation attacks and threats with a baton. Before the judges, the 20-year-old claimed the physical altercations had been voluntary scuffles. The young woman's pronounced neck injuries were not the result of strangulation, but merely harmless love bites, according to his explanation.
Further charges concerned damage to a vehicle, unauthorised withdrawals using a friend's debit card, and an attack on a supermarket security guard. The couple had also emptied bottles in a shop and redeemed the deposit receipt together.
The judges imposed a six-month prison sentence without probation on the main defendant. The 17-year-old was sentenced to a financial penalty of 240 euros for shoplifting. Legal remedies can still be filed against the judgment.
