The Vienna public prosecutor's office has submitted an extradition request to the United Arab Emirates after the son of a deceased woman found in Lower Austria was taken into custody there. Authorities spokeswoman Nina Bussek confirmed this on Tuesday to the Kleine Zeitung.

In early June, officials in Mödling discovered the remains of an elderly woman who had been sealed in a wall in the Mödling district. The woman, who was approaching her hundredth birthday, had previously been reported missing.

According to information from the newspaper "Heute", there is suspicion that the pensioner was encased in concrete some time after her natural death. The reason could have been social benefit fraud: possibly the deceased woman's pension continued to be collected after her death.

The 57-year-old son of the woman was arrested as she departed Dubai, according to "Heute". "We learned through the embassy that he was arrested", Bussek said. The Austrian law enforcement authorities initially had no further details.

The public prosecutor's office has ordered a forensic examination, the results of which are still pending. The investigation is proceeding in all directions.
