Two former representatives of the Syrian Assad regime have been sentenced to eight years imprisonment each by the Vienna Regional Court for torture and serious crimes against civilians.

A court in the Austrian capital sentenced two former officials of the ousted Syrian regime of Bashar al-Assad to prison terms on Monday. Judges in Vienna found the two defendants guilty of torture and further serious crimes against approximately twelve civilians. The sentence for each of the two men is eight years.
The trial took place at the Regional Court for Criminal Matters. The prosecution's case concerned systematic mistreatment and torture during the time when the two defendants served as regime representatives. The verdicts come in a context in which European judicial authorities are increasingly holding former members of the Assad regime, which fell at the end of 2024, to account.
The defence may lodge an appeal against the verdict.
