A man aged 21 from the Tongeren-Borgloon region has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment, but received a suspended sentence under conditions. He intimidated a 20-year-old woman with an air gun to force her into sexual intercourse.

A man aged 21 from the Tongeren-Borgloon region has been sentenced to three years' imprisonment, but received a suspended sentence under conditions. He intimidated a 20-year-old woman with an air gun to force her into sexual intercourse.
The pair met each other on a social network. On 11 August 2024 they met together at the family home of the young man. The woman, who has an intellectual disability, followed him to his room. At first there was mutual affection, but the situation escalated. The man demanded sexual relations and forced her to perform oral sex. Subsequently he committed rape.
At the first sign of resistance, the perpetrator drew attention to an air gun that lay on his desk. The woman felt threatened and stopped resisting. Afterwards she called a friend who came to collect her.
The victim gave an extensive statement to the police. The man later sent her an apology message and discussed the facts with his circle of friends. He made a full confession during questioning and in the courtroom.
Psychiatric experts determined that the risk of reoffending is considerable, but no mental disorder could be established. The perpetrator is fully liable. In addition to the suspended sentence, he must receive help for his personal and sexual difficulties. A prohibition on contacting the victim is in place for ten years. Furthermore, he loses his civil rights for five years. The victim is compensated with €3,625.
