17-year-old arrested after killing mother and sister with axe in Denderleeuw
A 17-year-old boy was arrested on Sunday evening in Iddergem following the deaths of his mother, aged 51, and his sister, aged 20. His lawyer describes the case as "very strange".
Double murder in Iddergem: adolescent suspected of striking with axe
On Sunday evening at around 23.00 hours, two women were found dead in a residential property in Iddergem, in the municipality of Denderleeuw, according to DHnet. The victims are a 51-year-old mother and her 20-year-old daughter. Emergency services dispatched to the scene were unable to revive them.
The family's son, aged 17, was apprehended immediately afterwards. According to VRT's judicial correspondent Dries Hiroux, the young man allegedly first struck his sister with an axe. When the mother left her bedroom on hearing the noise, he allegedly also turned against her. After the incidents, he himself allegedly called the police.
The adolescent, with no previous police record, was to appear before a judge on Monday. His lawyer described the case as a "very strange" and "singular affair". He emphasised that in such cases, "generally, there is a very identifiable element: drugs or extreme family violence that occurred previously". In this double murder case, no such element is said to have been identified so far.
The lawyer refused to provide further details, with the investigation still ongoing.
