Belgian federal police issued a search notice on Wednesday 9 September for Smail Ouennas, 39, according to bfmtv.com. The man had been granted temporary leave from his psychiatric care centre in Tournai, located roughly twenty kilometres from Lille, but never returned as required.
Ouennas has been interned at the facility since 2019 following an attempted murder. Authorities stress that he poses a direct threat to others.
"He represents a danger to the physical integrity of third parties. If you see him, do not approach him but immediately alert police services," the federal police stated in their statement.
The public is therefore strongly urged not to intervene and to contact law enforcement authorities as soon as a sighting is possible.
