Cyberattack strikes Belgian table tennis federation: 66,852 members affected
The Belgian Royal Federation and its French-speaking branch (AFTT) have fallen victim to a cyberattack. Personal data of tens of thousands of members may have been exposed.
Cyberattack on table tennis: names, membership numbers and club details leaked
According to RTBF Info, the Royal Belgian Table Tennis Federation and its French-speaking wing, the AFTT, have fallen victim to a cyberattack. The attacker published online samples of data including names, forenames, affiliation numbers, membership information and details of sporting sanctions.
The perpetrator claims to have obtained approximately 1.69 GB of data, including information on 66,852 members, 17,441 users and administrative accounts of clubs.
Jean-Michel Mureau, chairman of the AFTT, confirms the facts: "I can confirm that an attack has indeed taken place, of which we were informed on Thursday." Mureau adds that the IT operator has been tasked with investigating which data precisely have been compromised. He also confirms that the Royal Belgian Table Tennis Federation has likewise been affected.
The attack on the table tennis federations comes shortly after a similar incident at the French-speaking Gymnastics Federation (FfG), which announced on 14 September that it had been targeted by a cyberattack. In that incident, the membership administration of approximately 200,000 people was compromised.
