A breach in the IT systems of an external partner of Lidl Belgium has led to the theft of personal data of webshop users. The attackers managed to temporarily access a separate file where customer information was stored.

According to Het Belang van Limburg, the data includes names, telephone numbers, email addresses, dates of birth and customer numbers of people registered on the Belgian online shopping platform of the discount chain. How many people were affected has not been disclosed.

Spokeswoman Kim Geirnaert stated that the ordering platform itself was not hacked. Nor were passwords, account numbers, payment data or delivery addresses stolen. Customer accounts have not been compromised.

The supermarket has notified all victims directly. They were advised to watch out for suspicious emails or attempted identity fraud. So far, Lidl has no evidence that the stolen data has already been used for criminal purposes.

The external IT partner has closed the security gaps and filed a police report. Forensic specialists are investigating the exact circumstances. The privacy watchdog was also informed of the incident.
