Arrest in Malmedy: two foreign nationals linked to multiple thefts from homes
Two foreign nationals, one of Bulgarian nationality and the other Serbian, were apprehended by police whilst driving a vehicle in the territory of the Stavelot-Malmedy police zone, DHnet reported on Friday 4 September 2026, on the basis of a statement from the Liège public prosecutor's office.
During a traffic stop, officers searched the vehicle and discovered various tools as well as several pairs of gloves suspected of being used in burglaries. The occupants were also carrying jewellery and a sum of cash. The two men claimed that these items belonged to family members.
The investigations carried out following the arrest nevertheless made it possible to establish a link with several thefts committed in homes in the region. The evidence gathered during the inquiry led to the two individuals being considered suspects in these cases.
One of the suspects is a minor, the other is an adult. The latter was brought before an investigating judge, who issued an arrest warrant against him. The fate of the minor is not specified in the statement.
"The inquiry continues in order to determine the exact extent of their involvement and to identify any other potential victims," concluded the Liège public prosecutor's office.
