On Wednesday evening at approximately 18:20, emergency services received multiple calls from Louis De Naeyerplein. Witnesses saw a man attack a peer with a knife in front of a supermarket. Both men are residents of Willebroek.
Bystanders rushed to the victim's aid and attempted to keep him alive until emergency services arrived. However, the stab wounds proved too severe. The man succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
After the attack, the suspect fled the square. The knife, which he had purchased earlier that day at a shop on the same square, he left behind in a barber shop on Overwinningsstraat. Officers located the man shortly afterwards in the nearby area and arrested him. The suspect also had a serious cut wound on a finger.
The preliminary classification of the facts is murder. An investigating judge is leading the judicial investigation and will clarify the precise circumstances. The suspect remains in custody.
