A 32-year-old man from Genk has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for using severe violence to force a mentally vulnerable man in his thirties to withdraw €300 from a cash machine in Tongeren.

A 32-year-old man from Genk deliberately lured a vulnerable man in his thirties out of a café on 25 November 2024. He persuaded his victim to get into his car and drove to a cash machine. There he forced the victim to withdraw three hundred euros, using physical violence in the process. The man in his thirties suffered injuries to his nose and upper lip from a head-butt.
Following the incident, the victim sent distress calls to his father. The Tongeren prosecutor based his case on CCTV footage from both the café and the cash machine. According to the prosecution, it is unthinkable that someone with an intellectual disability would make up such an account. The offender deliberately exploited the vulnerable position of his victim.
The judge sentenced the Genk man to three years imprisonment, plus a fine of eight hundred euros. The victim receives compensation of €26,378 for the severe psychological damage he continues to suffer. He is dealing with lasting personal and domestic incapacity.
