Google News BE FR reports that a 23-year-old man, of Moroccan nationality, has been remanded in custody following his arrest on Thursday at Brussels-Midi station in possession of a combat weapon. His lawyer, Me Benoit Lemal, confirmed the measure. The man will appear next Wednesday before Brussels' investigative chamber.
He is suspected of membership of a criminal organisation and possession of a prohibited weapon. The Brussels prosecutor's office announced on Friday the opening of an investigation and the deprivation of liberty of the suspect.
According to daily Het Laatste Nieuws, the events date to Thursday morning, around 9:30 am. Customs officers posted at Brussels-Midi noticed the man due to his nervous behaviour and his clear attempt to avoid any inspection. As he sought to blend in with a group of passengers disembarking from the Eurostar, he was isolated and subjected to a thorough search.
It was at this point that customs officers discovered, in his sports bag, a loaded Kalashnikov rifle concealed beneath baby and children's clothes.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the man reportedly made the journey from France to Belgium, but reportedly holds a Spanish residence permit. His Moroccan nationality was confirmed by his lawyer.
