Kalashnikov found in Brussels-South: 23-year-old suspect remanded in custody
A 23-year-old man arrested with a loaded Kalashnikov in Brussels-South has been remanded in custody. He appears before the examining magistrate on Wednesday.
Suspect arrested with military weapon at Brussels-South station
La Libre reports that the man arrested on Thursday at Brussels-South station in possession of a military weapon has been remanded in custody by an examining judge. This was confirmed by his lawyer, Benoît Lemal.
The suspect is 23 years old and is suspected of being a member of a criminal organisation and of possessing a prohibited weapon. He appears before the Brussels examining magistrate on Wednesday.
The Brussels prosecutor's office announced on Friday that the man had been deprived of his liberty and that the public prosecution service had opened an investigation.
According to Het Laatste Nieuws, the man was noticed on Thursday at around 9.30 a.m. at Brussels-South by customs officers. He drew attention through nervous behaviour and appeared to be trying to escape the inspection. When he attempted to blend in with a group of Eurostar passengers, he was pulled from the crowd and subjected to a thorough search.
In his sports bag, customs officers found a loaded Kalashnikov hidden under baby and children's clothing, according to the Dutch-language newspaper. The man was subsequently arrested.
Also according to Het Laatste Nieuws, the man had travelled from France to Belgium but holds a Spanish residence permit.
