Kalashnikov found in sports bag at Brussels-South, man remanded in custody

A man arrested at Brussels-South with a loaded Kalashnikov in his sports bag has been remanded in custody. The Brussels prosecutor's office opened an investigation.

According to RTBF Info, the man arrested on Thursday at Brussels-Midi station with a loaded firearm has been remanded in custody, his lawyer stated. The Brussels prosecutor's office confirmed on Friday the deprivation of liberty and the opening of a judicial investigation.

According to Het Laatste Nieuws, customs officers spotted the individual around 9:30 at Brussels-Midi. His nervous behaviour and apparent attempt to avoid inspection drew their attention. The man had tried to blend in with a group of Eurostar passengers before being separated for a thorough search.

In his sports bag, customs officers discovered a loaded Kalashnikov concealed beneath children's and baby clothing. He was immediately arrested.

Also according to Het Laatste Nieuws, the man reportedly travelled from France to Belgium and is the holder of a Spanish residence permit.
