A man appeared before Namur judges on Monday accused of assault, false imprisonment and SMS threats committed against his former partner.

On Monday, the Namur court examined the case of a defendant accused of assaulting, unlawfully detaining and threatening by text message a woman with whom he had previously had a romantic relationship. The prosecution sought a sentence of fifteen months in custody, with a probationary period of five years.
The family tragedy occurred in April 2026. An acquaintance of the victim alerted Condroz police that a violent dispute had broken out between the two parties. The investigation also revealed other episodes of violence dating from February and March 2026.
Before the judges, the defendant partially admitted to his behaviour. He acknowledged striking his partner during an argument in which alcohol, cannabis and cocaine were present. He is also suspected of preventing the woman from leaving the premises and harassing her with intimidating messages. At the time of his arrest, police discovered cocaine in his possession; he is alleged to have subsequently snorted it whilst in detention.
The public prosecutor's representative argued for a sentence of fifteen months with a probationary suspension of five years, whilst accepting the idea of a main sentence supplemented by supervision. For their part, the defendant's counsel sought a suspended sentence with conditions, arguing that specialised supervision would prevent further incidents. The judges' decision is expected on 27 July.
