Qatargate: Belgian authorities' request concerning D. Avramopoulos transmitted to Parliament
The request to lift parliamentary immunity of former commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos has been transmitted to the Minister of Justice and is expected to be submitted to Parliament as part of the investigation into the Qatargate corruption scandal.

The request by Belgian authorities aimed at lifting the parliamentary immunity of Dimitris Avramopoulos has been transmitted to the Minister of Justice, Giorgos Floridis, by the prosecutor's office of the Court of Cassation. According to consistent reports, this matter is expected to be submitted to the Greek Parliament shortly.
The former European Commissioner for Migration, Internal Affairs and Citizenship is being called upon to provide explanations to Belgian justice in connection with the corruption case known as Qatargate, via the NGO Fight Impunity.
Mr Avramopoulos reacted categorically, refuting any involvement. In a statement, he clarified that he had no direct or indirect participation in anything reprehensible. He also stated that the issue that had attempted to be associated with his name had been closed for three years, with the seal of the European Commission, following a decision signed by Ursula von der Leyen.
Regarding his participation in the organisation Fight Impunity, the former commissioner emphasised that it was absolutely legal, declared and taxed. Furthermore, he indicated that he did not intend to make use of his parliamentary immunity, but would instead turn to Greek justice by requesting a full investigation into the matter.
The Qatargate affair concerns accusations of corruption and financing of European officials by Qatar, via various NGOs, including Fight Impunity.
