Romanian suspect (28) arrested after pursuit at 218 km/h and crash on E34 near Vosselaar
A 28-year-old Romanian has been detained following a dangerous police pursuit on the motorway, which ended in a crash against a lorry on the E34 near Vosselaar.

The investigating magistrate in Antwerp has detained a 28-year-old Romanian following a dangerous motorway pursuit, according to vrt.be. The man fled on Friday afternoon after two iPhone thefts and ultimately collided with a lorry on the E34 near Vosselaar.
On Friday around 16:00, an iPhone was stolen from an employee of a coffee bar in Mortsel. The number plate of the vehicle in which the suspects drove away was passed on to police. Shortly afterwards, an ANPR camera detected the Jaguar in which the two occupants were travelling.
A patrol from Minos police zone intercepted the vehicle at the junction of Boekenberglei with Jozef Verbovenlei. The two occupants chose to flee at that moment, which triggered a dangerous pursuit—at a time when traffic in and around Antwerp was heavy.
The driver headed via Luitenant Lippenslaan to the Antwerp Ring and then raced across the E313 towards the Netherlands. In doing so, he reached speeds of up to 218 kilometres per hour and overtook on the left, right and across the hard shoulder. Near the junction with the E34, there was almost a collision, according to the prosecutor's office.
A police helicopter followed the flight from the air and provided assistance to teams from Minos police zone and the federal traffic police. Near Vosselaar, the Jaguar struck the side of a traffic police vehicle and subsequently collided with a lorry. The car spun, hit the central reservation and came to a stop.
Police detained the two occupants at the scene: the 28-year-old driver and a 38-year-old passenger. It later emerged that there was also a connection to an iPhone theft at a catering establishment in Borsbeek. The prosecutor's office called for the investigating magistrate to consider traffic obstruction and theft.
The 28-year-old driver has been detained. The 38-year-old passenger was released. The remaining traffic offences committed during the pursuit will be handled by the traffic court.
