The Charleroi public prosecutor's office released information on Monday concerning a particularly brutal assault that occurred overnight Friday to Saturday in Dampremy. A man who was returning to his vehicle in front of his garage was targeted by several masked assailants.

The attackers arrived at the scene in another car. They immobilised their victim, tied him up and struck him while demanding money.

When the man's friends arrived to help him, the armed criminals opened fire on the group. One of the friends was hit by two bullets and rushed to hospital. His life was initially considered to be in danger.

On Monday, the prosecutor's office indicated that the condition of the person injured by gunfire had "stabilised", although his vital prognosis remains at risk. An investigating judge described the acts as unlawful confinement, extortion and attempted murder.

The presumed perpetrators, still at large, are the subject of an active search. The investigation continues.
