On 7 July, a 21-year-old Belgian woman was intercepted at Phuket airport as she was preparing to board a flight to Paris. Customs officers considered her two suitcases suspicious and conducted a thorough inspection.

Inside, officers discovered nearly 32 kilograms of cannabis, distributed across approximately twenty sealed vacuum-packed sachets. The merchandise represented a considerable quantity of narcotics.

Although it might have been thought that this was a trap designed to use the traveller as a drug mule, the young woman immediately admitted to being the owner of the luggage and its contents, according to information reported by HLN.

Salma E.K. was handcuffed on the spot and taken to Sakhu police station. She is now facing charges for attempted drug trafficking. Thai legislation provides for a maximum sentence of ten years' imprisonment for this offence. Furthermore, she could face a fine equivalent to four times the estimated value of the seized drugs.
